I had the huge pleasure of working with Andy when he was Executive Creative Director of iris New York. The agency was experiencing a management transition and needed one of those rarest of creatures –an inspiring leader who could both calm down and fire up an unsettled creative department. Andy needed to galvanize the existing team, raise standards and morale, whilst going through a period of major change. And he succeeded on all counts. Andy is very generous with his time and his talent. And his ability to listen to, understand and work with people in difficult circumstances marks him out as a very empathetic leader. To do all this and still manage to help them produce better work attests to his skill and determination.
Andy is not an ego, he talks softly and, like all genuinely talented people, lets his work speak for him. This means clients and staff lean into him. They like him and trust him because they know that he means what he says and that he will deliver for them. And he always does. In a world of bombast and hard-sell, Andy stands for substance over sizzle and is, as a result, a breath of fresh air. We are better for having met him. It's been an absolute pleasure working with him because he can bring so much to the table while demanding so little recognition. He's happy solving problems and creating solutions with pizzazz. As if that weren't enough, Andy is also tonnes of fun to work with - his energy, positivity and passion for his work is infectious, and the junior creatives very clearly look to him as a role model. Which brings me to mentorship - Andy is a great mentor of junior talent and I truly believe one day will make an excellent ECD.
Andy's not a unicorn. If the Dodo weren't extinct and there was only one left in the world that was an incredibly talented art based creative, Andy would be that Dodo (but a lot smarter looking and a lot more fun on a night out).
